Congress Seeks Tougher Border Policies & Military Aid for Ukraine and Israel

“Congress will require laws to be changed to return the border to what it was before,” he said.

That could include restrictions on the entry of asylum seekers across the Mexican border and other provisions to secure it, he said.

Republicans in the US Congress are seeking to link approval of foreign military aid to tougher border policies after President Joe Biden signed a stopgap bill extending funding for the US government until early next year.

“I think it will be very difficult to achieve this before the end of the year, and the current obstacle is the White House’s policy on the southern border,” Turner said.

This week, Congress returns to work, with legislation on Israel and Ukraine on the agenda. Further complications will call into question whether Washington will continue to provide resources and weapons to its allies.

Military assistance from the US

On October 1, the US Congress passed a temporary budget bill. It did not include new funding for assistance to Ukraine, since they decided to consider such an initiative separately.

After this, US President Joe Biden proposed that Congress allocate $106 billion. They want to use most of these funds ($60 billion) to help Ukraine. The package also included assistance to Israel.

Recently, President Vladimir Zelensky announced that the United States has allocated a new package of military assistance to Ukraine.

Politico wrote that Ukraine wants to receive short-range Sentinel radars from the United States to track ballistic missiles and other objects.
