Allergic reaction
Box goes to visit Marieke. She loves beautifully manicured nails and has used gel nail polish for years. She had no idea that there were health risks involved, until six months ago she suddenly developed complaints on her fingers.
“It started with skins and they eventually became cracks, so that it was completely open,” she says. She also had a lot of problems with her nails. “They were sensitive and very itchy.”
This allergic reaction is caused by acrylates, plastics that cause the gel polish to harden under a UV lamp, explains dermatologist Thomas Rustemeyer. These plastic particles can penetrate the skin when the paint is still liquid and the body can develop an allergy to them.
Major health risks
Unfortunately, the consequences of such an allergy are not limited to painful nails. Acrylics are also used to fill a tooth or, for example, in artificial hips. And that is a very big problem, explains dentistry professor Albert Feilzer.
