Hard work, intense game – Fürth wins against Wiesbaden

Fourth win in a row: In the 2nd Bundesliga, SpVgg Greuther Fürth won an intense game against newly promoted SV Wehen Wiesbaden. And move closer to the top teams in the table.

On Sunday (November 26th, 2023), Fürth beat the Wiesbaden team 2-0 (1-0) in front of their home crowd in the Ronhof. Armindo Sieb (20th minute) gave Fürth the lead, captain Branimir Hrgota made everything clear late on (84th). It was the fourth success in a row without conceding a goal for Fürth. At the same time, Wiesbaden’s run of four wins in a row ended.

Newly promoted Wiesbaden falls back to eighth place (21 points). Wiesbaden’s coach Markus Kauczinski saw “Overall a good game, an intense second division game at a high level”. His team didn’t take advantage of the opportunities – unlike the Fürth team.

With the victory, SpVgg is close to the top group. In the table, the “Cloverleaves” are now in fifth place with 24 points and are therefore six points behind leaders St. Pauli. “Today we were lucky in one situation or another”said coach Alexander Zorninger at the Sportschau microphone.

Fürth punished SVWW mistakes in the build-up game

The hosts got into the game a little better than Wiesbaden. Fürth quickly secured the majority of the ball possession and tried to control the game build-up. The first approach to the goal also went to SpVgg’s account: Branimir Hrgota narrowly missed (4th) after being left alone by the Wiesbaden defense, which was anything but secure at the beginning.

It was a mistake in Wiesbaden’s build-up game, which then allowed Fürth to take the lead. Julian Green Ivan Prtajin successfully pressed the ball in the center circle, Robert Wagner moved forward with the ball and fed Sieb, who hit the far corner.

After falling behind, the SVWW fought back vigorously. Fürth, who had had almost 60 percent of the ball until then, lost control and, above all, their defensive order. Wiesbaden was given space by the hosts, but did not take advantage of their playful superiority. Striker Prtajin first failed to hit the ball correctly after the busy Thijmen Goppel was presented (28th) and then narrowly missed a shot with his head (29th).

Disjointed game: Hardly any flow in the Fürth Ronhof

Wiesbaden could almost have celebrated immediately after the restart, but Fürth goalkeeper Jonas Urbig parried Robin Heußer’s shot from a tight angle (46′). It was clear that SpVgg, who were in the front and had a somewhat flattering lead, still had a lot of work to do.

After that, there was hardly any flow of the game. None of the opponents were able to gain a decisive advantage; it was an increasingly disjointed game with a few interruptions and more fouls. Chances to score were in short supply.

The Wiesbaden team’s standards certainly brought danger, but they didn’t lead to an equalizer. Instead, Hrgota decided the game with a precise low shot after a corner from Green, who slipped through to the captain.

Fürth in Braunschweig, Wiesbaden against Kiel

On the 15th matchday, the “Cloverleaves” will face Eintracht Braunschweig (Saturday, 1 p.m.). At the same time, SV Wehen Wiesbaden is challenged away from home against Holstein Kiel.
