Russia’s Increasing Military Production and New Combat Aviation: Su-57 and PAK-DA

Russia has been increasing its military production over the past year, mainly due to the military actions in Ukraine. It is not by chance at the end of July that it became known that for the month the volume of pipes produced in the largest industrial enterprises exceeded the figure for the entire year 2022.

And at the beginning of September, it was reported that the Russian concept “Kalashnikov” will launch two new cars, which will double the production of the “Bix” portable packages and the high-current “Kitol” dump trucks. The company announced again at the time that it was for the 9M33 anti-aircraft anti-aircraft missiles, the “Bix”p-1” anti-aircraft missiles and the “Kitolov-2M” missiles.

Against this background, the Chinese portal Sohu has now published up-to-date information on the two newest aircraft of the Russian combat aviation – the Su-57 multi-purpose fighter and the PAK-DA strategic bomber. Here are their main combat characteristics.

The Su-57 multipurpose fighter

The development of this aircraft began in the early 1990s at the Experimental Design Bureau of PO Sukhoi. In 2019, serial production of the Su-57 fighter jet began. In December 2020, the Russian Air Force received the first production fighter. As of 2020, ten prototypes and two aircraft are in service with the Russian army.

Although the Su-57 is currently the “youngest” operational fighter, the Russians are very confident in it, mainly because of its maneuverability: the aircraft has a single fuselage and wing design. The vortex generator in the forward part of the wingtip increases the combat performance of the Su-57 when attacking at a high angle, allowing the aircraft to perform a “cobra” maneuver in conditions of close maneuvering air combat – something that even the leading ones cannot boast of the F-22 fighter, which is in service with the US Army.

In terms of armament, the Su-57 also has characteristics different from other fighter models. The aircraft can be equipped with weapons weighing up to 7,500 kilograms, including the 9-A1-4071K 30mm air gun. Two built-in bomb bays can accommodate Kh-35UE supersonic anti-ship missiles, Kh-58U anti-radar missiles, RVV-MD medium-range air-to-air missiles and other types of projectiles.

In addition, the Su-57 has a mount that can mount two anti-ship missiles with a range of over 400 kilometers.

In the future it will be possible to install and supersonic anti-ship stealth cruise missiles PJ-10 BrahMos, which will give the Su-57 a real opportunity to destroy an enemy 1000 kilometers away in an instant. Because the fighter can be equipped with a wide variety of missile weapons, some have called it “Russia’s mobile air arsenal.”

What are its advantages?

The PAK-DA strategic bomber (advanced long-range aviation complex)

The first test flight of the American stealth (“invisible”) bomber B-2 Spirit, well known to lovers of military equipment, was conducted in July 1989.

After its successful development in the Soviet Union, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, a program was initiated to develop a Russian strategic stealth bomber. However, after the collapse of the USSR, this project was never realized.

In recent years, in connection with the rise of Russia’s military industry, the question of creating a stealth bomber similar to the American B-2 Spirit has again become relevant.

Although Moscow has not disclosed the detailed characteristics of this aircraft, which is currently being tested, it is expected to have a firing range of 3,500 kilometers and a bomb load of between 100 and 120 tons (according to Russian media, the payload will be 30 tons and range will be 6000-9000 kilometers).

How much ammunition does Russia produce?

However, there is a shortage of personnel in the country’s military factories

PAK DA will be able to carry munitions for conventional tactical and strategic bombing, as well as nuclear warheads for long-range strategic operations.

In addition, the Russian military plans to further modernize the PAK DA so that it can work together with the Su-57 fighter in air combat. As it became known, it is planned that the strategic bomber will be equipped with four engines, as well as some weapons and equipment that can be supplied to the Su-57.
