Kim Huybrechts and Mario Vandenbogaerde in Quarter-Finals: World Darts Championship Recap

Kim Huybrechts has no lack of self-confidence.

In his 1/16th final he sent former world champion Gerwyn Price to bed without dessert. He also started the match well against Stephen Bunting.

But Bunting soon showed that he was becoming a tough customer. The Englishman did not give our compatriot an inch and followed to 8-8. Money time, because whoever first scored 10 winning legs would advance to the quarter-finals.

The 140s flew around both players’ ears, but it was Bunting who kept his cool on the checkouts. After a thriller, the scoreboard read 8-10: Belgian 1 exit.

On to Mario Vandenbogaerde’s match, then.

He was presented with a tough one with Michael van Gerwen. With four maximum scores, the Dutchman quickly showed that he played in a higher class than the number 69 in the world.

In addition, Van Gerwen achieved another 40% on the checkouts, which resulted in a deserved 10-6 victory.

And so the hope lay with Dimitri Van den Bergh to be the only Belgian to advance to the quarter-finals. He got James Wade in front of him late that evening.

But “The Dreammaker” alternated strong moments with doubts. He soon found himself trailing 1-4. He was never able to overcome that – despite five 180s that followed.

So no continuation of the tour de force against Anderson. The third Belgian exit of the evening after another 6-10.
