Jeffrey Holt, who died in June at age 82, left $3.8 million to the city of Hinsdale, New Hampshire. The New York Times reports this.
Holt lived a modest life. He worked as a caretaker at a trailer park in Hinsdale, New Hampshire, and did not stand out in any way, mostly keeping to himself. In a city with a population of about 4 thousand people, quite a few knew him. But now everything has changed. It turns out that Holt was rich and bequeathed his entire fortune – $3.8 million – to Hinsdale.
The city authorities were shocked.
“The unique thing is that he kept it a secret. He was very unassuming. He just really wanted to contribute in a way that made the community better, without any fanfare or recognition on his part.” – said the local administration.
Holt had done odd jobs for his friend Smith over the years—clearing brush, removing snow, doing maintenance. However, at one time Holt managed to make money from a grain mill, and then invested the money in several funds.
Under the terms of the will, $3.8 million is to be used to “support projects, programs and organizations that provide health, educational, recreational or cultural benefits to the residents of Hinsdale.”
The city’s annual budget is approximately $12 million. The money could be used to fix the city clock or paint City Hall, officials said, but it would be spent sparingly, in the spirit of how Holt lived, the newspaper said.
“In Russia there was a more poignant story: four years ago, an 86-year-old former teacher died, who a year before his death gave a million rubles accumulated over 64 years of work on his own home to children from the Gavroche social rehabilitation center,” — comments the telegram channel “Pool No. 3” on the article.
