Brave Delivery Driver Caio Benicio Saves Children from Knife Attack in Dublin

Benicio was in central Dublin last Thursday when a man with a knife started stabbing a group of children. He injured a woman and three children. The woman and a five-year-old girl suffered serious injuries; a five-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl were less seriously injured. The suspect was arrested on the spot after he also stabbed himself with the knife.

But it could have been much worse if the Brazilian had not attacked the attacker with his motorcycle helmet. “I waved that helmet with all my strength,” Benicio told the British newspaper The Guardian.

Don’t think, just do

Several fundraising campaigns were subsequently started on GoFundMe for the fast food courier, who moved to Ireland only a year ago. One of the actions called Buy Caio Benicio a Pint (buy a pint for Caio Benicio) has already raised more than 347,000 euros. More than 32,000 people have made a donation on this page.

The Brazilian, like the other people who intervened, was called ‘a hero’ by Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, but the deliverer does not want to call himself that: “I am a father, I have two children of my own, and I think every parent would have done the same. It’s something you don’t think about, you just do it.”

He has a 12-year-old son and a 19-year-old daughter. Their reaction afterwards was especially good for him, he says: “It’s nice to make them proud, that’s very nice.”

Another person who intervened, a 17-year-old student from France, received a call from French President Emmanuel Macron to thank him for his heroic act.

Far-right hooligans

During Thursday evening it became even more restless in the center of Dublin. A large group of rioters, according to the police chief ‘extreme right-wing hooligans’, sought confrontation with the police. This happened after rumors spread on social media that the perpetrator of the stabbing was of foreign origin. Several buses and other vehicles went up in flames and shops were looted.

The police do not want to say anything about the identity of the suspect.
