“For me, that’s the category Novak is in”: Boris Becker compares Novak Djokovic to Lionel Messi, LeBron James and Tom Brady

Boris Becker compared Novak Djokovic to Lionel Messi, LeBron James and Tom Brady and described him as the “best athlete” of today.

The world number one had a brilliant season at 36, winning three Grand Slam titles this year and reaching the historic milestone of 24 years. Djokovic holds numerous ATP records: he has been number 1 in the world for over 400 weeks, has won 40 Masters 1000 titles, reached the ATP final seven times and has been at the top of the world rankings for eight years.

Recently, German Boris Becker, former coach of “Nole”, said on Eurosport Germany’s TennisPodcast that Djokovic goes beyond tennis and should be compared with the best athletes in other sports, even claiming that he is the best athlete today.

“Maybe you have to look at it more broadly, and he is not only the best tennis player, but also the best athlete at the moment. I want to compare him to a Lionel Messi, a LeBron James and a Tom Brady,” said Becker.

“For me, that’s the category that Novak falls into, because all of these athletes dominate or have already dominated their sport in their mid to late thirties,” said the boss.

“I hope he continues like this for a long time, because nothing better can happen to young players than to play at the same level as the most successful player of all time. That’s the best lesson in tennis,” said the former world number 1.

The German, who now works with Holger Rune, highlighted Djokovic’s ability to maintain himself at the highest level for so many years:

“For me he is the Lion King. We are doing our best to convey to tennis fans what is impossible to convey: what this player has won in his 16 or 17-year career and that at 36 years old he is perhaps his best plays tennis,” said Becker.

“He won three Grand Slam tournaments this year and reached the final at Wimbledon – he was very close to the calendar Grand Slam at the age of 36. That’s out of this world,” he added.
