WHO Reports Mysterious Pneumonia Affecting Children in Northern China

JawaPos.com – WHO or the World Health Organization reports an increase in undiagnosed respiratory diseases, one of which is the mysterious pneumonia that is affecting children in northern China.

On November 21, 2023, WHO identified media and ProMED reports of a cluster of undiagnosed pneumonia affecting children in Northern China.

It is not yet clear whether this is related to the overall increase in respiratory infections previously reported by Chinese authorities or a different event.

Reporting from the official WHO website, Saturday (25/11/2023), WHO has requested additional epidemiological and clinical information as well as laboratory results from the reported group of children, through the International Health Regulations mechanism.

Apart from that, WHO also maintains contact with doctors and scientists through technical partnerships and WHO networks in China.

Various efforts have been made to definitively identify reported cases of this disease.

Previously, on November 13 2023, China’s National Health Commission reported an incident of respiratory disease which mostly attacked children.

Chinese authorities also linked the increase in cases to the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions and also the arrival of winter.

On November 23, 2023, WHO held a teleconference with Chinese health authorities from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and Beijing Children’s Hospital.

This teleconference was facilitated by the National Health Commission and the National Administration of Disease Control and Prevention.

The data provided indicates a spike or increase in outpatient consultations and inpatient admissions of children due to pneumonia. Mycoplasma pneumonia since May and also Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), adenovirus and influenza virus since October 2023.

The outbreak of pneumonia in China has resulted in children’s hospitals in Beijing, Liaoning and other places being overwhelmed in treating sick children.
