An Israeli-owned cargo ship was damaged in a suspected Indian Ocean drone strike by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in the Indian Ocean, a Pentagon official said. According to him, the attack was carried out on Friday, and “the ship suffered minor damage”. No one was injured in the incident.
Maritime security company Ambrey said the Maltese-flagged and French-operated container ship was damaged when the drone exploded near the vessel.
“The ship was operated by a company linked to Israel, which was assessed as the reason it was attacked,” Ambrey said, adding that in the days before the attack, transmissions tracking the ship had stopped shortly after it left port in the United Arab Emirates.
The announcement of the attack comes almost a week after Iran-backed Yemeni Houthi rebels seized an Israeli-linked cargo ship in the southern Red Sea. The captain of the ship and his first deputy are Bulgarians, and the international crew also includes citizens of Romania, Ukraine, Mexico and the Philippines. The Houthis announced that they would treat them as guests according to the laws of Islam.
