Ministry of Health reveal the causes of resistance to implementing technology Wolbachia to suppress Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) in Bali.

Director General of Disease Prevention and Control at the Ministry of Health, Maxi Rein Rondonuwu, said the rejection was the result of insufficient outreach to the community. People are worried because they don’t know the benefits of the Wolbachia mosquito.

“Indeed, the cause of implementation in Bali, I see, is socialization. Getting to the grass roots is indeed lacking, so the people there don’t know the information about its benefits,” said Maxi in an online media briefing, Friday (24/11).

Maxi emphasized that outreach regarding the Wolbachia mosquito should be carried out intensively. The implementation of the spread of the Wolbachia mosquito in Bali, he said, is different from other cities that are part of the pilot project.

“In Bali it is handled by one of the donors who finance it, so coordination in the field with the Health Service is lacking,” he said.

Director of Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases at the Ministry of Health, Imran Pambudi, said there were 76,449 cases of dengue fever with 571 deaths from January to November 2023. This figure is down from 143,300 cases with 1,236 deaths in 2022.

“Actually, we were able to reduce cases by more than half last year, but the death rate is still quite high. So we need to create or innovate in order to prevent and control dengue,” he said.

The Ministry of Health will start making innovations to suppress the spread of dengue fever with the Wolbachia mosquito. For starters, the Wolbachia mosquito was distributed in five cities, namely West Jakarta (DKI Jakarta), Bandung (West Java), Semarang (Central Java), Bontang (East Kalimantan), and Kupang (East Nusa Tenggara).

The Ministry of Health said this was in accordance with the Decree of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Number 1341 concerning the Implementation of Wolbachia Pilot Project as a Dengue Management Innovation.
