Concrete Pyramids on Narva Bridge: Estonia Prepares for Possible Border Closure Amid Migration Pressure

The first concrete pyramids on the Narva Bridge appeared on the evening of November 16, after 19 Somali and Syrian citizens who tried to enter the country without a legal basis arrived at Estonia’s eastern border.

A day earlier, police and border guards in the Ida-Viru district, which includes Narva, announced that they were preparing for a possible closure of the border crossing.

“We are closely following what is happening at the border, as Russia is putting migration pressure on Estonia and Finland by sending people to our border who are not eligible to enter the European Union. Several large groups have been trying to enter Estonia since last week,” added an official.

Obstacles are also being prepared in connection with the fact that from February 1, the Russian checkpoint “Ivangorod” on the border with Estonia will be closed for reconstruction.

The Estonian government announced the day before that it is ready to close the border with Russia, as Finland has done, but there is no valid reason for this yet.

Finnish border guards reported that an extremely high number of undocumented people have tried to enter Finland through border checkpoints on the southeastern border in recent months.
