A new study shows men with pot bellies are at higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s. Inflammation of abdominal fat is said to be associated with the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
In research presented at the Radiological Society of North America, researchers say abdominal fat or visceral fat can accumulate around organs even in people with a healthy BMI, potentially causing changes in the brain decades before symptoms of cognitive decline are visible. This visceral fat is associated with systemic inflammation and higher insulin levels, both of which are thought to be involved in the development of Alzheimer’s
“We need to move away from traditional concepts of body fat, such as BMI, and really look at the specifics of how fat is distributed to understand the health risks,” said the study’s senior author, Dr. Cyrus Raji, a neuroradiologist at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Louis. quoted from CNN.
The study found individuals in their 40s and 50s with hidden amounts of belly fat had higher amounts of the abnormal protein or amyloid in the parts of the brain earliest in Alzheimer’s disease.
“There are also gender differences, with men having a higher association between abdominal fat and amyloid than women,” said Raji.
“The reason this is important is because men have more visceral fat than women.”
The study also found a link between deep abdominal fat and brain atrophy, or a reduction in gray matter, in the memory center of the brain called the hippocampus. The brain’s gray matter contains most of the brain cells that tell the body what to do. White matter consists of fibers, usually distributed into bundles called tracts, that form connections between brain cells and the rest of the nervous system.
“We also found that individuals with higher amounts of visceral fat tended to have more inflammation in widespread white matter pathways in the brain,” said lead author Dr. Mahsa Dolatshahi, postdoctoral researcher at Washington University School of Medicine.
