Al-Marsad newspaper: Dr. Muhammad Mahri, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, revealed the dangers of holding a sneeze, and its effect on the eyes and brain.
He said during an intervention with the “Sayidaty” program: Holding a sneeze is a very bad thing, as sneezing is the expulsion of very high-pressure air from the lungs through the nose or mouth.
Air coming out of the facial cavities
He continued: If the person catches this sneeze and closes the air outlet, the air will not know how to come out and will be forced to exit from the cavities in the face. This is not a common thing, but it does happen.
He continued: Through these cavities, the closest possible place where the air can be affected is the area surrounding the eyes, and it is possible for it to penetrate the facial cavity and reach the brain.
Sneezing and its effect on the brain
Regarding its effect on the eyes or brain, Dr. Muhammad Mahri explained: Sneezing is considered to cleanse the lungs of bacterial objects and helps in expelling these objects from the body. If the sneeze is suppressed and the bacteria do not exit the air through the nose and mouth and head to the sinuses, inflammation and infection are transmitted. To an isolated place where blood vessels are few and bacteria live and cause problems.
He added: The eye is the first thing to be affected, causing the eye to close. Inflammation or infection can be transmitted through the cavities to the nerves of the eye and affect the eye itself, which is major damage, and in the end it is a sneeze if the person takes it out and is relieved.
Getting rid of sneezing
He continued: If most people want to sneeze, they feel ashamed of those around them, and I tell them that if a sneeze occurs to you, it is a divine thing that must be eliminated. It is not a shameful thing that you are afraid of sneezing, and it is preferable for it to come out through the mouth and nose, because the anatomical cavities in the face are many, and it may not only affect the body. The eye can also affect the brain.
