A tequila celebration among friends ended in tragedy with the crash of three cars, leaving a young woman dead and three women seriously injured in Queens (NYC).
The three drivers were miraculously uninjured in the dramatic pileup that occurred around 4:30 a.m. Sunday. en Long Island Expressway (LIE), according to the NYPD.
Reginald Nash, a 24-year-old resident of Roosevelt (Nassau County, Long Island), was charged on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, injuring the four friends he was transporting. The group of five had spent the night drinking tequila cocktails at a bar in ManhattanQueens prosecutors said.
“We got bottles and drank them,” Nash told police after his arrest, referring to his night of partying before the shock recorded at 89 mphaccording to court documents cited by Daily News. He detailed that he and the four victims had been partying at the “Taj Lounge” in Chelsea. Then admitted to driving drunk through Manhattan and through the Queens-Midtown tunnel before reaching the Long Island Expressway and that in the crash he saw that at least two of his passengers were ejected from the car.
When he was questioned, he scored 0.12 on a breathalyzer test, 50% above the legal limit of 0.08, police said. He was charged with aggravated vehicular manslaughter, vehicular assault, driving while intoxicated and reckless driving, among other charges. A Queens Criminal Court judge ordered him held on $250,000 bail during a brief arraignment Monday night.
Your friend and neighbor Cameron Mency, a 23-year-old young man, died in a spectacular three-car accident. The tragedy began when Nash was driving his 2021 Honda Accord eastbound on the freeway through Sunnyside and crashed into a structure near the Greenpoint Ave overpass.
The impact caused Nash’s sedan to spin wildly and collide with another man’s 2018 Toyota Rav 4, which in turn crashed into a 2021 Kia Telluride.
The impact ejected Mency from Nash’s car. The Long Island resident was thrown from the vehicle. Paramedics took her to Bellevue Hospital, but were unable to save her. The other three passengers – two 22-year-old women and another 36-year-old – were transferred in critical condition to Elmhurst Hospital, where they remain.
All charges are mere accusations and those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
Hours earlier, also early Sunday morning, another road tragedy occurred in upstate New York, when a 14-year-old boy who was driving a car without a license and speeding died and his three young passengers were seriously injured when he lost control of the steering wheel and crashed into some trees.
The authorities remember that there is zero tolerance for drivers who drive at excess speed and/or under the influence of alcohol and drugs..
Traffic accidents are a great challenge in New York. This despite “Vision Zero” road safety plan created in 2014 by then-new Mayor Bill de Blasio, who promised to make the city safer for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists with a goal of zero deaths by 2024. According to the NYPD, Cyclist deaths increased 260% in the first six months of 2023 and 325% since the implementation of the “Vision Zero” plan in 2014. In many cases the drivers flee.
