Although cashless payments are becoming more and more popular, we still sometimes pay for purchases in a traditional way. Each of us has probably seen badly worn coins or damaged banknotes in circulation.

It is not worth keeping such means of payment in your wallet, especially before the holidays, when we often make cash payments at traditional markets. Reason? The cashier will have every right not to accept them. Fortunately, we can avoid trouble. This is stated in the Order of the President of the National Bank of Poland No. 31/2013 of December 17, 2013.

Where to exchange damaged money?

It turns out that the exchange can be made in any bank in Poland. According to Interia Biznes, there are exceptions, however, when we do not receive the equivalent of the destroyed money, and we may even be left with nothing. If the damage is not significant, replacement is usually done immediately.

However, we may hear a refusal when we want to exchange very damaged money. Such copies are accepted on the basis of an application and sent to the central bank. To complete the appropriate application, you must provide basic personal and contact details. Later we should receive a decision from the National Bank of Poland regarding the replacement of damaged money.

When will we not recover the entire value of the damaged money? When we have part of a banknote or coin, we will only receive 50%. their valuesand sometimes we receive nothing and the change does not take place.

The order of the President of the National Bank of Poland states that we will obtain 100 percent. value of the damaged money under several conditions. When over 75 percent have been preserved. surface of the banknote in one fragment, the banknote was torn into several pieces (no more than 9), which in total constitute the entire damaged banknote, the coin is in one piece or two pieces – core and ring.

At the same time, we can count on 50 percent. value of damaged money when 45% has been preserved. up to 75% of the banknote’s surface in one fragment or only one of the two parts of the coin has been preserved – core the ring.

When will the bank not exchange money?

If we brought a damaged banknote to the bank, we will have to complete a short formality. In the presence of the delivering person, the institution’s employee is obliged to glue the banknote, if possible, and add a note – whether it is 100%. or 50 percent the banknote we want to exchange. Then the money goes to the National Bank of Poland, where a decision is made about what to do next.

But Transferring damaged money to the National Bank of Poland does not always result in replacement. This will happen if less than 45 percent has survived. surface of the banknote in one piece. A similar situation will occur if we will bring a piece of one coin fragment – a ring or core – to the bank.

Then the National Bank of Poland will not only not exchange it for new ones, but may also not return the transferred fragments. If the applicant does not report the money for exchange within 6 months, the NBP will destroy it.
