Wasim Haq, a member of the Board of Directors of the English Football Association, resigned on Thursday after a post in which he compared Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, against the backdrop of the war in the Gaza Strip.
Haqq was suspended from work because of his post on the “X” platform, before deleting it and offering his apology.
The Football Association, the governing body for football in England, conducted an investigation into the matter.
Haq wrote on the “X” platform: “I resigned this morning from the English Football Association. I also reiterate my apologies to the Jewish community.”
He added: “This war has left thousands dead, and many of us are suffering from extreme frustration and turmoil. I hope that football will play a future role in alleviating tensions between communities.”
He shared his resignation letter, in which he said: “My comment was a direct criticism of a politician and not about a race or religious group. In expressing these feelings, I chose completely the wrong words, and this has affected my leadership position that I hold in the English Football Association.”
He added that he intends to “interact personally and directly with members of the Jewish community to engage and understand,” and also offered to help the FA develop “a systematic process for reuniting communities in the future.”
Haq joined the FA Council in 2019 as a representative of the black, Asian and ethnic minority community, noting that he was dismissed from a similar role on the Tennis Association Council last week.
