The fences that real estate agent Midvast placed around a property in Nieuw-West last week were removed today. Riding school owner Mandy van Drunick was very relieved when she heard the good news. “I went outside to see it with my own eyes. I immediately thought: I can make the children, my ponies, happy again!”, she tells AT5.
Van Drunick has lived at the Akersluis in Nieuw-West for 32 years, where she runs a riding school. Last Thursday she was surprised when real estate developer Midvast had fences installed that completely surrounded the site.
The site for Mandy’s Pony Fun is owned by Midvast. The real estate developer wants to build on the land and was in discussions with the riding school to also take over that site. But that conversation went wrong. The offer was not very realistic, Van Drunick thought. So the sale did not go through. To the surprise of everyone at the riding school, Midvast then installed dozens of fences around the entire site.
Midvast informed AT5 that the fences were installed in preparation for a renovation, but that is unbelievable according to the Van Drunick family. “It feels like bullying.”
To survive
As a result, her twelve ponies could no longer go to the riding arena to run freely and the lessons that Mandy gives to about a hundred children between the ages of 6 and 12 could not take place. “It has been a week of survival, you notice that there is a certain tension. It also had a lot of impact on the children who come here for lessons,” she says.
“Ultimately, Midvast wants to do great things, but in good harmony”
Midvast now states that the fences can be removed ‘temporarily’, because the renovation of the site will not start for the time being. The dismantling started around 8:00 am. “Now there are still some poles for a small piece of land. If all goes well, they will remove it completely,” says Mandy. That makes a big difference, also for those involved. For example, people who ride at the riding school had already started a petition last weekend.
Midvast said in the statement that the company ‘strives to realize all projects in close consultation and in harmony with all stakeholders’. “We deeply regret the commotion that arose following the installation of the fence around our plot on the Akersluis in Nieuw-West,” the real estate agent writes.

The fences will come back when construction starts on the Midvast site. But then they will first go to the riding school for consultation. “Midvast wants to have a good relationship with local residents, tenants and the municipality. They also want to talk to their neighbors.”
Full statement Midvast:
“Midvast strives to realize all its projects in good consultation and harmony with all stakeholders. Our goal is to achieve a positive impact, where a good relationship with municipalities and local residents is essential.
We therefore deeply regret the commotion that arose following the installation of the fence around our plot on the Akersluis in Amsterdam Nieuw-West.
Since we do not expect to start construction activities before the end of 2023, we have decided to have this fence temporarily removed this morning. We would like to emphasize once again that the riding school and cheese shop have been accessible all this time and all activities there have been able to continue as usual.”
