The rains recorded in Paraná affected the building of the Popular Library of Paraná and unfortunately hundreds of books became wet and were ruined.
In this regard, Belén Perezlindo, the person in charge of the Communication area of the Popular Libraryinformed the media that “these inconveniences have been suffered for a long time.”
“The heavy rains, first on October 22 and now yesterday, damaged the heritage and hundreds of books, a lot of bibliographic material, got wet, especially what is available to members in the reading room,” said the worker by highlighting that the leaks are “significant.”
It should be noted that the prestigious library building is more than a hundred years old, it was inaugurated in 1910 and since 2006 it has been a national historical monument.
“It is a very old building, which for 16 years has been behind an enhancement project to restore it,” said Perezlindo, highlighting that a tender was called recently and a few months ago a bid was already presented. company to carry out the work.
When asked about the project, the worker mentioned that it is contemplated to fix ceilings, incorporate an elevator in the building, renovate an auditorium, which has not been used for 15 years, and various actions.
Perezlindo maintained that the building “is getting worse and worse, before the leaks were small, but now they are very large and unfortunately hundreds of books were discarded because they are irrecoverable. “We are working to rescue some, but unfortunately it does not happen with all of them.”
He mentioned that at this moment they are working on relocating the books to prevent them from getting wet in future rains. “We love the library very much and we are working to restore it, it is a dream that we hope comes true,” she concluded.
