Both Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, who are both in the fifth and sixth parts of Scream starred in, has unexpectedly withdrawn from the popular horror film series. What exactly is going on?
In 2022 became the film series Scream na ten years revived. In addition to veterans such as Courteney Cox, Neve Campbell and David Arquette, new actors were also cast. Barrera and Ortega (right in the photo, now known thanks to, among others Wednesday) were chosen for the two leading roles. They are included in the fifth and sixth parts of Scream chased by the serial killer Ghostface. The two actresses play half-sisters.
Both films were a great success and the acting of the two actresses was also praised. Ortega in particular has now become a popular actress. The 21-year-old American is not alone in playing Scream a role, but also in various other horror titles. She is also called the new one scream queen called – a title that first belonged to Screamactress Campbell, who made her breakthrough in 1996 at the age of 23 thanks to the first part in the horror series.
Fans were thrilled to hear that in August Scream receives a seventh part. This time with a different director (Happy Death Daycreator Christopher Landon), but with Ortega and Barrera. According to American media, their contracts had not yet been signed at the time, because the actors in Hollywood were still on strike at the time.
Barrera will not participate after all, she announced earlier this week. But not because of a tight schedule or dissatisfaction with her salary: her statements on social media would have been the reason, reports The Hollywood Reporter. The actress shared messages about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, in which she clearly sided with the Palestinians in strong terms.
“We will not tolerate anti-Semitism and incitement to hatred in any form. This includes references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, distortion of the Holocaust and other hate speech,” it said. Scream-producer Spyglass.
Director Landon would not support this decision. “This sucks,” he wrote on X. “This is not my decision.” The post was deleted shortly afterwards. Barrera himself also responded: “I condemn hatred. But silence is not an option.”

After Barrera, Ortega is now also leaving Scream 7became clear on Wednesday evening. According to Deadline this has nothing to do with the fact that she said goodbye to her ‘film half-sister’. Ortega would already have other recordings in the same period, such as the second season of the Netflix hit Wednesday and the movie Beetlejuice.
Yet it is suspected that there is more going on, because Ortega also spoke out on social media about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, making pro-Palestinian statements, just like Barrera.
The cast of the seventh Screampart is therefore thinning out considerably. It is not yet known whether the roles of Ortega and Barrera will be taken over by someone, or whether there will be more focus on other actors.
New cast members include Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown. Cox, who appeared in all six parts as journalist Gale Weathers, would also return. Campbell left earlier: the actress could not reach an agreement during salary negotiations.
