German police have raided the homes of supporters of Hamas and another pro-Palestinian organization banned in Germany in four states.
The action took place this morning in the states of Berlin, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein. The largest action was in Berlin, where eleven houses were searched. A total of fifteen houses were searched.
Terrorist organization
Since November 2, Germany has imposed a ban on all activities of Hamas and the pro-Palestinian network Samidoun in Germany. Hamas had previously been classified as a terrorist organization in Germany, but its supporters remained out of harm’s way until November 2. According to German domestic security services, there are about 450 people active for Hamas in Germany.
Samidoun is an organization that, according to Minister Faeser of the Interior, is a front for the distribution of anti-Semitic propaganda. It is estimated that several dozen people are active for Samidoun in Germany.
‘Clear signal’
“We continue our consistent action against radical Islamists,” Faeser (SPD) said today. “With the bans against Hamas and Samidoun in Germany, we have sent a clear signal that we will not tolerate any glorification or support of Hamas’ barbaric terror against Israel.”
In Berlin, pro-Palestinian demonstrations got out of hand several times and several demonstrations were banned for fear of escalation and anti-Semitic slogans. The ban came into effect on November 2 and does not mean that demonstrations are no longer allowed to take place, but it does mean that there must be no link with Hamas.
Germany struggles more than other European countries to criticize Israel’s approach to Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Because of the Second World War, the country feels a responsibility to stand firmly behind Israel. Chancellor Scholz was the first foreign leader to approach Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu after the Hamas attacks on October 7.
