The Role of Women in Libyan Security Forces: From Gaddafi’s Amazons to the Present Day

Since the time of Muammar Gaddafi, the security forces of Libya have welcomed representatives of the fair sex into their service. This was reported by the Arab Africa telegram channel.

After the dissolution of Gaddafi’s Amazons in 2011, women from the Libyan security forces did not disappear anywhere.

Today, representatives of the fair sex serve in the financial and medical units of the armed forces, in customs authorities, as well as in the police and mukhabarat (intelligence).

“Amazon Guard” is the unofficial name of a detachment of female bodyguards who were the elite personal protection of the leader of the Libyan Jamahiriya, Muammar Gaddafi. Their official name was “revolutionary nuns.” The name “green nuns” was also found. The detachment consisted entirely of women who had undergone special combat training.
