Delay in Implementation of Ban on Menthol Cigarettes in Norway

Actually, the ban on menthol cigarettes should have come to Norway a long time ago, as part of the EU’s tobacco directive. The authorities have previously signaled that it would be introduced in 2021.

– Implementation of the directive in Norway has been delayed due to processes in the EU and other EFTA countries. The ministry expects that the directive will come into force in Norway during 2024. Then the ban on flavors will also come into force here, the Ministry of Health and Welfare informs NTB.

Click cigarettes have become very popular in Norway in recent years. They contain one or more balls in the filter with menthol or other flavours, which you squeeze to release the aroma. In line with the EU’s tobacco directive, they are banned in large parts of Europe.

Pure menthol cigarettes or other types of flavored cigarettes will also be banned.

– Before the directive can be implemented in Norwegian law, it must be included in the EEA agreement. Due to processes within the EU, which are outside Norwegian control, this has taken time, says department director Erlend Bø in the Directorate of Health to NTB.

He also says that the introduction of the ban will take place in 2024, but cannot give a specific date.

On Thursday, the Storting also adopts a ban on the sale of flavored e-cigarettes. This comes into effect at the same time as it becomes legal to sell e-cigarettes with nicotine in Norway next year.

The flavor ban means in practice that only e-cigarettes or refill containers with a tobacco flavor can be sold.
