Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak delivered a huge surprise, admitting that the Israelis were the ones who built the tunnels discovered under Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza.
Barak explained, in an interview with CNN anchor Christiane Amanpour, that the bunkers under Al-Shifa Hospital were built by Israeli developers, noting that this happened when Israel was managing the place decades ago.
“Decades ago, we ran the place,” he said. So we kept them. “It’s been decades, several decades, maybe 5 or 4 decades ago.”
He added: “We helped them build these bunkers in order to provide more space to operate the hospital within the very limited size of this complex.”
Amanpour stopped the former Israeli Prime Minister and said: “Are you saying that this place was built by Israeli engineers?” Did I make a mistake in my expression?” He replied: “No, no, as you know, a few decades ago we were managing the place, so we helped them…we helped them build these bunkers in order to provide more space to operate the hospital.”
The CNN anchor expressed her surprise at the answer, adding that the comment “shocked me a little.”
The video clip of the interview, during which Barak made these controversial statements, received widespread interaction on social media platforms, as many published it in the context of discrediting the Israeli army’s account of the tunnels under Al-Shifa Hospital.
Yesterday, the Israeli army displayed a fortified tunnel near Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza, which includes a bathroom, a kitchen, and an air-conditioned meeting room, saying that it was a command center for Hamas fighters.
The entrance to the tunnel, which is about two meters high, can be accessed through an external opening in the ground of the hospital complex, which was once crowded with tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians, who the army said were human shields in the war.
Colonel Elad Tsouri, commander of an Israeli armored division that discovered the tunnel, said: “This is how they survived; Because they use the hospital as a human shield to protect them, and here they can stay for a long time. There is an air-conditioned room inside.”
The World Health Organization announced on Monday that its teams had only seen civilians in Al-Shifa Hospital in the Gaza Strip, and that there was no evidence that it was used as a military headquarters by Hamas..
On Sunday, Hamas confirmed that the Israeli army’s statements about using the Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza to detain Israeli prisoners are misleading and false, stressing that these statements aim to cover up the security and military failure of the occupation army.
