As an extension of the numerous demonstrations organized in the departments, the Young Farmers of Occitanie are demonstrating in Toulouse this November 22 to demand “a global plan for Occitan agriculture” and for “a long-term vision. »Significant traffic disruptions are expected in the Pink City.
A cry from the heart and anger, also a fed-up which pushes the farmers of the region to demonstrate today in Toulouse at the call of the Young Farmers (JA) to demand “a global plan for Occitan agriculture » and for “a long-term vision” of a sector today caught between several fires, several contradictory injunctions and which questions its future.

On the one hand, the pressure from ecological associations – which sometimes borders onagribashing – and ever stricter environmental standards; on the other, a complex economic situation, exacerbated by inflation, still high in the agri-food sector, and tense relations with agri-food manufacturers and mass retail brands. Without forgetting the increasingly serious consequences of global warming, between water shortages, more intense and more numerous droughts, and other calamities such as fires, storms or floods; but also diseases that persist – avian flu – or occur like EHD (epizootic haemorrhagic disease).
Fear of suffering the same fate as the textile industry
“Certain figures make us proud and show how strong France is with an agriculture which occupies half of its territory, which is in the lead in the European Union and which employs nearly 900,000 citizens on farms. A figure that can be greatly multiplied if we consider all the jobs generated by agriculture. However, the majority of farmers do not see the benefits on their farm,” said Arnaud Gaillot, president of the JA.

“Yes, the sector is worried because it is afraid of experiencing the same fate as major sectors that have disappeared or are in danger, such as the textile industry or nuclear power. Because, we who feed, are not content to suffer the effects of successive crises on the climatic, economic and health levels. We are also under constant pressure from society and public authorities to make poorly thought-out transitions. Agriculture is ready to make its transitions. Unfortunately, the lack of courage of our politicians, against a backdrop of electoral ambition, does not allow us to build a clear vision for our sector and above all to stick to it,” he continues, placing particular emphasis on “the accumulation of standards » which, according to him, must be stopped.
“Let’s all fight together for a new agricultural policy that will motivate future generations to take up farming. We are asking for a normative pause”, indicate the JA of Occitanie in their call for the demonstration, the slogans of which are also “stop the increase in charges” and “no transition under pressure”.

Farmers also demand compliance with the Egalim law, which ensures fair remuneration for producers but for which large retailers are demanding exemptions. The JA also express their refusal to see livestock farming included in the new European directive on industrial emissions (IED), or the 4% fallow obligation imposed by the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
The regional demonstration in Toulouse follows several other actions which have taken place in recent weeks in several departments in the region. The processions are scheduled to leave at 8 a.m. for a meeting at 10 a.m. in front of the administrative city in the center of Toulouse. Suffice it to say that traffic will be severely disrupted in the Pink City with the arrival of more than a hundred tractors.
