North Korea’s Successful Spy Satellite Launch: Pyongyang’s Military Advances

Pyongyang

North Korea (North Korea) claims to have successfully launched a spy satellite into space. This was the first spy satellite North Korea.

Reported ReutersWednesday (22/11/2023), North Korea’s official news agency, Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), said the spy satellite had successfully launched into outer space orbit. North Korea also promised to launch more spy satellites in the near future.

The launch of Pyongyang’s spy satellite was carried out under the direct supervision of the leader of the communist regime, Kim Jong Un. The satellite, named Malligyong-1, is claimed to have been successfully launched with a Chollima-1 rocket from the Sohae satellite launch facility on Tuesday (21/11) evening, at around 22.42 local time.

North Korea’s National Aerospace Technology Authority, as quoted KCNAsaid the satellite successfully entered orbit at 22.54 local time. KCNA said that Kim Jong Un personally observed and supervised the launch of the satellite.

North Korea’s space agency also said it would send several other spy satellites in the near future. This is aimed at securing reconnaissance capabilities over South Korea (South Korea) and other areas of interest to the North Korean Armed Forces.

“Launching a reconnaissance satellite is a legitimate right (for North Korea) to strengthen its self-defense capabilities,” he wrote KCNA in his report.

This launch will be claimed to increase Pyongyang’s military readiness to face ‘dangerous military movements’ from North Korea’s enemies. North Korean authorities also claim to have notified Japan in advance about plans to launch a satellite between Wednesday (22/11) and December 1, after two similar attempts ended in failure earlier this year.

The launch of North Korea’s spy satellite comes a week before South Korea plans to launch its first spy satellite into space using a Falcon 9 rocket operated by the United States (US) company, Space .

However, Japan and South Korea could not immediately verify whether the satellite launched by Pyongyang had actually succeeded in reaching orbit in outer space or not. Spokesperson for the Pentagon or US Department of Defense, Sabrina Singh, claimed that the US military was still assessing whether the North Korean launch was successful or not.

South Korea also responded to North Korea’s satellite launch by announcing the suspension of part of the 2018 agreement between the two Koreas. The agreement was originally designed to reduce military tensions.

South Korea’s National Security Council, according to the news agency Yonhap, explained that the move would involve the restoration of operational reconnaissance and surveillance in the area around the military demarcation line between the two countries. North Korea’s satellite launch on Tuesday (21/11) evening was the first since Kim Jong Un met Russian President Vladimir Putin during a visit to Moscow’s modern space facilities last September. At that time, Putin promised to help Pyongyang in making satellites.

Seoul officials said this latest launch attempt likely used technical assistance from North Korea’s ally Moscow. The aid is thought to be related to Pyongyang’s delivery of millions of artillery shells to Russia. Both Russia and North Korea have denied the accusations.
