Wow, Water on the Surface is Leaking to the Earth’s Core!

Scientists discovered the fact that there is water on Earth’s surface which leaked into the earth’s core. This incident was the answer to the thin layer around the liquid metal of the earth’s outer core. It is believed that water on the surface is the cause of this differentiation.

Water that leaks from the surface is carried downward by tectonic plates. The water touches the core after ‘adventure’ down 2,900 km below the Earth.

Launch IFL Science, the water then undergoes differentiation to form a hydrogen-rich and silicate-rich layer about several hundred kilometers thick. The layer is also expected to be less dense with lower seismic velocities, something geologists have measured.

“For many years, it was believed that the exchange of material between the Earth’s core and the Earth’s mantle occurred in small amounts. However, high-pressure experiments we conducted recently revealed a different story. We found that when water reaches the core-mantle boundary, it reacts with the silicon in the core, forming silica,” said co-author Dr Dan Shim of Arizona State University in a statement.

“This discovery, together with our previous observations of diamonds forming from water reacting with carbon in liquid iron under extreme pressure, suggests much more dynamic core-mantle interactions, suggesting substantial material exchange,” he continued.

There is a lot we don’t know about the deepest parts of the Earth. Recently, researchers found evidence that two regions around the core are remnants of the planetary collision that formed the Moon.
