To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first Impressionist salon, the Roger-Quilliot art museum (MARQ) in Clermont-Ferrand is organizing an exhibition in partnership with the Musée d’Orsay, entitled Snow. The Ministry of Culture explains why this theme was chosen: “In the current context of global warming, snow is becoming rarer and more precious. However, the impressionist painters were the first to reveal its dazzling and marvelous character with such talent. In fact, snow, like water, corresponds perfectly to their search for light and color. Their removed touch and the almost systematic refusal of black outline a new way of representing this meteorological phenomenon long synonymous with cold and misery in painting. »

Among the prestigious paintings that can be admired at the MARQ, La Pie by Claude Monet (1869), considered as “particularly representative of the impressionist way of painting snow with its rich colorful palette. This iconic canvas will be the starting point of the exhibition which will unfold from the beginnings of Impressionism to its last years in the 1920s.” Works by Charles-François Daubigny, Maximilien Luce, Albert Lebourg, Pierre Bonnard and Armand Guillaumin will make up this exhibition, with a regional component. : “Regional painting centers are taking up this method and making the snowy landscape a real obligatory passage for the landscaper (works by Victor Charreton of MARQ, the Grenoble and Bourgoin-Jallieu museums). »

In all, 34 cities will celebrate the very first exhibition on April 15, 1874, which gave its name to the movement and was organized in the former studio of photographer Gaspard Félix Tournachon. The group received its baptismal name from an art critic and his sarcastic take on Monet’s painting “Impression, Soleil Levant” (1872).“Eager to address all audiences », the MARQ team has planned guided tours for groups and individuals, artistic activities during school holidays and proposals for schools throughout the exhibition. The mediation team is also preparing an independent mediation space around the genre of landscape. “European Museum Night” will also be an opportunity to visit this exhibition, which will take place from March 8 to June 30.
