At least three people have been killed in a landslide in southeastern Alaska, local authorities said. Several people are still missing.
On Monday evening, part of a steep and dense mountainside shifted. It happened along the coastal stretch of the Zimovia Highway in Wrangell. That fishing and lumberjack village has about two thousand inhabitants.
Emergency workers found the body of a young woman on Monday evening after the landslide. Two more bodies were found in the area on Tuesday. Two young people and an adult are believed to be missing.
Rescue operations were partly suspended on Tuesday due to the risk of more landslides. Later that day, the rescue team was able to get back to work.
The collapse followed a severe storm. This has already caused a lot of rain and wind in Southeast Alaska in recent days. The storm had increased the risk of landslides in the region.
