Reims Volley 51 beats Royan and advances to the 2nd round of the Coupe de France

In a completely different atmosphere than Saturday evening this Wednesday at René Tys, Reims Volley 51 entered the competition in the Coupe de France in Royan. The opportunity for José Amet to rotate his squad against a team with fewer rotations. In a meeting with a more random intensity than in the championship, the Rémois blew hot and cold but were able to rely on their leaders to win in four sets. Until then, return to the championship on Saturday, against Mende, still in Reims.

THE GAME

Accustomed to stringing together victories last year in Elite, Reims Volley 51 does not intend to change its habits much at the professional level. Surprising 3rd in League B, José Amet’s protégés wanted to take advantage of the arrival of a Royan (also promoted) reduced this Tuesday to René Tys to capitalize during his entry into contention in the Coupe de France. However, the start was difficult for the locals with the reshuffled starting six. Royan was in the lead despite several serving errors, the fault of some difficulties from Reims with the pass (8-13). Billel Soualem’s good performance first stopped the bleeding before putting Reims back in the saddle (14-15). Better, Matthieu Sasse with a winning serve followed by an ace, put Reims Volley 51 in the lead. Enough to cause an opposing timeout. The end of the set, more engaged, offered a duel with better performance. And if Soualem then Ikken saved two set points, Billel Soualem, again, did not miss the opportunity to offer the first round to the Marnais after good work by Yohann Leray in the center on the previous point.

The start of the second set once again offered a waste of Reims attack which allowed Royan to make a first break. A serving fault and two successive attack errors caused a delay in ignition. A less messy time, the visitors capitalized (2-7), before being hampered in reception. Reims captain Billel Soualem, decidedly inspired, brought his team to -1 (8-9). But once again, Reims stammered in its volleyball (12-17). The moment chosen by José Amet to bring in Quentin Rossard and Abdel-Aziz Doumbia. Not enough to reduce inaccuracies against a solidified visiting defense. Logically, Royan won the second set (16-25).

Soualem good captain, Doumbia and Ikken precious

At 1-1, José Amet decided to rest his captain and keep Doumbia in the six. Good for him. After two counters from Stepnov, Doumbia offered himself a nice winning service, before Boudjemaa Ikken, in half-hearted up until then, was no longer vigilant at the net (5-0). More committed, the Rémois maintained the pace thanks to the good service of Ikken (9-2). Not always consistent in the quality of play produced, the locals nevertheless took advantage of a series of Doumbia serving to maintain a comfortable advantage (17-12). And if the lead was contested for a while, the solidity of the block (three in a row) let Reims move towards winning the set (20-14). Ikken and Brochot could join the bench satisfied with the work completed by their teammates (25-17).

Continuing, the Rémois remained solid on the counter and generally skilful in attack, despite a few errors that were still avoidable (10-6). The work of Martin Lallemand and a mistake by Doumbia in attack still allowed the visitors to come back (11-11). More seriously, Soualem and Doumbia put the team back on track (16-12). This time, Royan, worn out by the lack of rotation, gave up (19-14) and did not come back (25-18). Here is Reims in the 2nd round of the Cup and with maintained momentum.
