A man in Missouri, USA, recently discovered an intact fly in his colon (the end area of ​​the large intestine) during a colonoscopy. The doctor said that it was a mystery how the insect got into the intestines. He speculated that it might be a man. Eating lettuce contaminated with fly larvae the day before medical treatment allowed the maggots to escape the stomach acid and mature into worms in the stomach.

The Daily Mail reported that this case was recently published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology. The 63-year-old man underwent routine colorectal cancer screening this year. It was normal until reaching the colon, when the camera was surprised to see a fly. The man told the doctor that he did not know how the insects entered his body, saying that he only drank clear liquid used to clean the intestines the day before the examination.

However, he revealed that he ate a pizza and lettuce the night before he started fasting, but said he did not remember there were flies in the food. The report pointed out that in rare cases, flies will lay eggs in fruits and vegetables, and these eggs survive the stomach acid and hatch in the intestines.

Flies and their larvae infect the human intestine, causing intestinal myiasis. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said some infected patients are asymptomatic, but some develop abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea.

In the 1980s, the mother of a 1-year-old girl in Washington State (Washington, USA) found “wriggling maggots” in her feces.
