NU.nl regularly gives you an overview of the situation in Ukraine. This time: the German Defense Minister promised extra military aid during a visit to Kyiv. The British Ministry of Defense in turn says that Russia is saving its cruise missiles for new attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure.

The German support package is running according to Reuters for another four anti-aircraft systems of the Iris-T SLM type. Delivery of those four will not begin until the end of next year at the earliest. Ukraine received eight. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius also promised 20,000 artillery shells.

“I am sure it will help you in the fight against Russian aggression,” Pistorius said. He said the additional military support underlines that Germany is a “reliable long-term partner” for Ukraine.

British expect new Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure

With the anti-aircraft systems, Ukraine is arming itself against Russian missile attacks. The British Ministry of Defence stilt Tuesday that the Russian army has recently put a lot of effort into weakening Ukraine’s air defenses. This should enable the Russians to do a lot of damage to Ukrainian infrastructure, such as power stations, again this winter.

The British ministry also says that Russia is keeping its best cruise missiles in reserve in order to be able to deploy as much as possible this coming winter. According to the British, hardly any Russian launches have been observed in the past two months. This strengthens British suspicions that critical Ukrainian infrastructure will be targeted again this winter, just as was the case last year.

Earlier on Tuesday, port infrastructure in the Odesa region was hit by Russian missiles, according to Ukraine. Artillery attacks in the Donetsk and Kharkiv regions reportedly killed and wounded, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said. A coal mine is also said to have been hit during the shelling. As a result, 39 miners would have been briefly trapped underground.

Russia cannot live with the current Ukrainian government

Russia cannot live peacefully alongside Ukraine under the current Ukrainian regime. This is what Russia’s top diplomat Rodion Miroshnik says. Russia will, according to Miroshnik, “successfully resist NATO’s power and completely demilitarize Ukraine, however long that may take.”
Miroshnik calls the current Ukrainian rulers “toxic”. The government in Kyiv “violates human rights, commits crimes against civilians and allows banned weapons from NATO to enter the country.”

Miroshnik spoke on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the mass protests in Kyiv between November 21, 2013 and the fall of President Viktor Yanukovych on February 22, 2014. The ouster of Yanukovych, who was labeled as pro-Russian, is often seen as the beginning of the current struggle between Russia and Ukraine seen.

UN: 10,000 civilians killed by war in Ukraine

More than 10,000 civilians have died in Ukraine due to the war that broke out at the end of February 2022. The number of injured is over 18,500. These figures were shared on Tuesday by the UN monitoring mission in Ukraine.

In the period from August to October, 86 percent of confirmed casualties occurred in areas under the control of the Ukrainian government. Nearly half of these casualties were far away from the front lines. “As a result, no place in Ukraine is completely safe,” warns Danielle Bell, the head of the UN monitoring mission.

The UN figures only include deaths confirmed by the UN mission. According to the United Nations, the actual death toll may be considerably higher because it is difficult to verify information, which also takes a lot of time.
