2023 was a year for the Germany team to forget. But it will be difficult, given the worst performance in almost 70 years. The last match was this Tuesday’s friendly against Austria, which ended in a 2-0 defeat at the Ernst Happel stadium, in Vienna.
Austria 2 x 0 Germany – Highlights – International Friendly
The German team had more possession of the ball in the first half (61% to 39%), but the Austrians were more dangerous and created more scoring chances. In the 29th minute, midfielder Sabitzer invaded the area, swung in front of the marker and shot low, into the corner of goalkeeper Trapp.
Germany continues to be a disorganized team, which loses the ball a lot. And emotionally unbalanced. At the beginning of the second half, striker Sané tried to steal the ball from left-back Mwene, made a foul, got awkward with his opponent and pushed him in the face. Result: red card.
3 minutes into the 2nd half – direct red card for Germany’s Leroy Sané against Austria
Austria managed to keep the ball longer, despite the German team being uncomfortable even with one less player.
Until, in the 27th minute of the final stage, defender Alaba found a great pass for center forward Gregoritsch, who made the wall for Baumgarten. The attacking midfielder entered the area and played beautifully, with a dig, over the goalkeeper.
This was Germany’s sixth and last defeat in 11 games in 2023. The team had, on the other hand, three wins and two draws. The host team for the next Euro Cup — and therefore already qualified — this year had the its worst performance in 67 years (33.3%).

Worse than that, only in 1956, when they had five defeats in eight games (29.1%), in addition to two wins and a draw. This was just two years after their first World Cup title.
Another very bad campaign was in 2018, the year of the World Cup in Russia, which the German team ended with six defeats, three draws and four wins in 13 games (38.4% success rate).
