Many winter sports enthusiasts are already going on a skiing holiday. That’s much earlier than normal. The early snowfall and low snow line in the Alps lures them to the winter sports areas. And the snow showers aren’t over yet.
There is still a chance of snow showers on the north side of the Alps on Wednesday. According to Weatheronline the snowfall limit is around 1200 meters. That is already somewhat lower than in recent days.
5 to 15 centimeters of snow is expected in the northern half of the Alps. In Switzerland, up to 20 centimeters of snow can fall regionally.
“This is not an unnecessary luxury because rainfall has left its mark high in the mountains,” writes Weeronline. “The expected amounts of snow until Wednesday could cover those tracks again.”
The fallen snow has not gone unnoticed by winter sports enthusiasts. Holiday providers Sunweb and TUI have noticed this. “The first snow that has fallen is attractive to winter sports enthusiasts,” says a TUI spokesperson.
According to TUI, 60 percent more bookings have been made compared to the previous weeks. “There was already a lot of interest for a stay over Christmas and we now see demand increasing rapidly for the surrounding weeks.”
Sunweb mainly sees an increase in the number of winter sports trips booked to France. “Wherever the most snow has fallen.” According to Sunweb, the number of visitors to French ski areas was 12 percent higher last week than in the same period last year. People travel to both higher and lower areas, the major winter sports provider notes.
