He receives an amount of 15,000 euros and a unique work of art.
Scientific researcher Jorge Domínguez Andrés investigates the body’s different (immune) responses to infections. He focuses on immunology, vaccines, infectious diseases and evolution. For example, he studied the metabolite dimethyl itaconate, a substance that our body produces itself in response to infections, inhibits inflammation and strengthens the immune system. In another study, he showed that the improved immune response resulting from exposure to certain infections can be passed down through generations. His research into the influence of evolutionary processes on the human immune response may lead to new approaches for the treatment and prevention of diseases.
