A new entrance to Penn Station in New York

The American railway company Amtrak has unveiled the new entrance to Penn Station in New York.

Pennsylvania Station (more commonly known as New York Penn) is located beneath Madison Square Garden and is the busiest transportation facility in the Western Hemisphere.

The station’s busiest entrance, at 7th Avenue and 32nd Street, is used by 600,000 customers each day. The work has now been completed and aimed to increase its width by 50 percent.

In addition, a new glass canopy replaced the old concrete overhang from the 1970s, and the station’s two original escalators were replaced with two new ones connecting passengers to the mezzanine.

A new ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant elevator was also installed, both to make the entrance fully accessible and to assist those with heavy luggage.

“Penn Station’s monumental illuminated signage” will allow travelers to locate station entrances and work is also underway to widen sidewalks along the west side of 7th Avenue to reduce the feeling of crowded crowds and improve safety and orientation.

The work follows the unveiling of a refurbished waiting area at the station in 2020, including a new information desk, seating with power sockets and USB ports, and new LED ceiling lighting.
Commenting on the news, Stephen Gardner, CEO of Amtrak, the American railway company said: “We are proud to roll out the welcome mat of our new modern entrance for the 600,000 daily visitors to New York’s Penn Station. Having a direct, accessible entrance at the intersection of 32nd and 7th will improve the customer experience for all passengers, as they can now take an elevator, descend wider stairs, and have an additional third escalator to assist them to enter or leave the station.
