Former Soviet military pilot Viktor Belenko, who flew the latest MiG-25P fighter-interceptor to Japan in 1976, died in the United States at the age of 76. The New York Times reports this.
As the newspaper found out, Belenko died in a nursing home in Illinois on September 24.
He received American citizenship in 1980, 4 years after he flew an advanced Soviet military aircraft to Japan. In the US, he worked as a consultant to aircraft manufacturers and federal agencies.
Viktor Belenko, being a senior lieutenant in the USSR Air Force, flew to Japan on September 6, 1976 on a MiG-25P. He landed at the airport in Hokkaido. Thus, the secret Soviet plane fell into the possession of US intelligence services.
Soon the car was returned to the Soviet Union. However, first American experts thoroughly studied the design and avionics of the fighter.
