One of the best-selling and sought-after electric cars, the Tesla Model 3, has taken the last place in the reliability ranking created by the German TÜV technical inspection experts in the category of 2-3-year-old cars.
TÜV reports that 14.7 percent of two- to three-year-old Tesla Model 3s are found to have “significant defects” during general inspections, while the average for the category is just 5.7 percent. Therefore, Tesla Model 3 occupies the last 111th place, lagging even behind the owner of the penultimate place, Dacia Logan, which has 11.4 percent of significant defects.
To be fair, it must be said that the Tesla electric car is one of those with an average mileage of 55,000 km in this age segment (an average of 41,000 km), but in general, this does not change the situation, because other “long-distance drivers” have fewer defects.
TÜV believes that a large part of the Model 3’s poor performance is that the manufacturer does not specify maintenance intervals. For this reason, many vehicles are not regularly checked at service stations.
However, electric cars also need to be regularly maintained, according to TÜV experts, reminding that electric car owners should pay the most attention to vehicle brakes and suspension.
Problems with brakes tend to happen because they are used much less often than with cars with internal combustion engines due to recuperation. The result is worse braking performance due to rust, while the explanation for the most frequent suspension defects is the greater weight of the electric car – after all, they have to take into account the large weight of the traction battery. The result is an expensive repair.
TÜV statistics show that, in general, in all age groups and mileage categories, approximately every fifth vehicle with “significant” or “dangerous defects” fails the general inspection, and it is also concluded that there have been no noticeable improvements in the technical safety of the vehicle fleet in recent years.
