Question:
Hello Doc, I am a 29 year old woman and am currently pregnant. Is it safe to continue having sex while pregnant?
Is there any advice on what you should and shouldn’t do when having sex while you’re pregnant?
GN (female, 29 years old)
Answer:
In general, having sex during early pregnancy is a safe activity to do. However, make sure you don’t have any special health conditions that could endanger pregnancy during intercourse, such as:
Placenta that is low or covering the birth canal (risk of causing bleeding) Leaking amniotic fluid History of having given birth to a premature baby Mother and husband suffer from venereal disease (for example genital herpes)
It is recommended to find a comfortable sexual position. If necessary, you can use lubricants, especially if the vagina is drier and hurts due to intercourse.
This may be caused by the influence of pregnancy hormones. It is not recommended to have intimate relations if there is bleeding from the vagina, heavy vaginal discharge, amniotic fluid discharge, or persistent abdominal pain or cramps.
