René van der Gijp is not happy with the match that Jerdy Schouten played in the match against Ireland (1-0) last Saturday evening. The 26-year-old PSV player played his first international match since June 2022, but according to the analyst he did not give up.

Van der Gijp and Wim Kieft are discussing the international match of the Dutch national team when the former mentions Schouten’s match. “He played so badly, didn’t he Wim? My god. He surrendered everything,” says the KieftJansenEgmondGijp podcast.

“Could he have been nervous or something? Normally he doesn’t give up that much,” Kieft responds to his colleague’s words. “I have no idea,” says Gijp, before discussing the possible cause of Schouten’s poorer game.

“For me, I don’t know if that also applies to you, playing for the Dutch national team was always very, very different from playing for my club.” Kieft agrees. “Yes, that’s very different. That’s why you often see those shitty matches.”

“When I played for the Dutch national team, almost all of them were shitty matches, I can still remember. Very occasionally not,” the former striker remembers.

“But it was never the same as when you played with Ajax against Sparta Rotterdam and won big. That always felt much better than when you won 7-0 against Gibraltar. It is often a bit of an inconvenience.”

“I always try to say: your club is a kind of home,” Van der Gijp continues. “When you join the Dutch national team, you are really out of your normal ‘do’. That is why I have always found it so great that you saw almost no difference in players like Wesley Sneijder.”
