Six shirts worn by Argentine star Lionel Messi during his country’s crowning journey in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be put up for public auction next December, as Sotheby’s announced Monday, and their value was estimated at 10 million dollars.
The Argentine star wore these shirts during the first half in the group stage against Saudi Arabia and Mexico, in addition to the subsequent matches in the knockout rounds against Australia, the Netherlands and Croatia and the final match against France.
Messi finally succeeded in winning the World Championship gold, after failing to win it in four previous editions.
Sotheby’s said that if the price of the jerseys actually exceeds $10 million, it could make the auction the most valuable collection of sports memorabilia ever sold at auction.
The most expensive single jersey ever sold at auction was the one worn by basketball legend Michael Jordan during the NBA Finals with the Chicago Bulls in 1998, which sold for $10.1 million last year.
Auction houses have taken an increasing interest in sports memorabilia in recent years, which is a growing market.
The shirts are being put up for auction by US technology start-up AC Momento, which helps athletes manage memorabilia collections.
A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Unicas project, an initiative with a children’s hospital in Barcelona that helps children with rare diseases.
The shirts will be available for public viewing when they are put up for auction, from November 30 to December 14.
