Six of the Argentine’s jerseys will be auctioned. The famous auction house Sotheby’s is expecting a record.
WHAT HAPPENED? The auction house Sotheby’s is auctioning off six Argentina jerseys from world champion Lionel Messi as a set and is expecting revenue of more than ten million dollars. The soccer star wore the valuable pieces last year during the World Cup in Qatar on the way to winning the title, and in December they will be sold as a “six pack”.
The bidding is for the Messi jerseys from the games against Saudi Arabia, Mexico (preliminary round), Australia (round of 16), the Netherlands (quarter-finals), Croatia (semi-finals) and France (final).
A LOOK AT THE NUMBERS: If the successful bid breaks the 10 million mark, it could be the highest price for a piece of sports memorabilia. Last year, a Michael Jordan jersey was auctioned for $10.1 million. The basketball legend wore this in 1998, when Jordan won his sixth and final NBA title with the Chicago Bulls.

WHAT’S NEXT? Part of the proceeds from the Messi auction will go to the UNICAS project, an initiative with a children’s hospital in Barcelona. The jerseys will be on public display from November 30th to December 14th.
