The Slavoj Vyšehrad Match-fixing Scandal: Indictments, Testimonies, and Trial Updates

The public prosecutor indicted 21 people and the club Slavoj Vyšehrad for influencing matches of the second and third leagues in favor of Vyšehrad. According to the indictment, Berbr was at the head of an organized group that participated in the manipulation of ten matches in 2019 and 2020. He faces up to 12 years in prison.

The four defendants already know the punishments – they agreed with the public prosecutor on guilt and punishment, and the court approved the agreements with conditional and financial penalties and bans. The other defendants, including Berbra, deny guilt.

For this year, the court had ordered 45 hearing days, for next year another 28 have been blocked in the program – a week in January, two weeks in March and a week each in April, May and June. “With the most optimal course, we could get to the first closing arguments in March and the sentencing could be in May or June,” said the judge.

He is scheduled to question several people this week, including former referees Tomáš Grímm and Marko Janoch. They were also defendants in the case and testified as defendants, but they made a deal and accepted the punishment, and now I will testify as witnesses.

The court is also awaiting the testimony of another witness, David Bejdák, the former masseur of Slavoj Vyšehrad. His testimony is important for the case, but Bejdák excused himself for health reasons and the judge is investigating whether he will be able to testify next year.

The student assumes that he will be able to interview witnesses in November and will start playing recordings of phone calls and meetings that the police made during the investigation of the case. There are hours of recordings, it is not yet clear whether they will have to be played in whole or only parts. If defense attorneys insisted on replaying the entire calls, it would take several days.

“It is assumed that by December 7th we could manage, if not all, then the overwhelming majority of the audio recordings,” hopes the judge. In January, he would like to finish playing the recordings, read the remaining documentary evidence and would like to interview Bejdák. No further witnesses have yet been proposed.
