Recently, it has become quite common for computer games to sell better and more on digital platforms than in physical format. But in October 2023, there was almost a change in the UK market.
For Gamesindustry.biz has reported that digital game sales were down 24% compared to October 2022, with a total of 1.6 million digital games sold during the month. Physical games, on the other hand, increased by 8%, and 1.08 million games were traded during the month. It is said that the reason for this change is that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III launched in November, while Modern Warfare II debuted last October.
In terms of games specifically, we learn that while EA Sports FC 24 was the biggest physical and digital game of the month, the title managed to sell 16% fewer units than FIFA 23. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was the second biggest game of the month and the best selling of the month new games, with sales that were 2% higher than God of War: Ragnarök, 94% higher than Spider-Man: Miles Morales and 9% lower than Spider-Man.
It should be said that although Super Mario Bros. Wonder came in third on the physical charts, we don’t know how big digital sales were in October, as Nintendo doesn’t share that data. However, it is believed to be probably the biggest digital Mario launch ever, as the game broke every possible physical record. This means Assassin’s Creed Mirage came third on the digital charts (and fourth on the physical charts).
Looking at the consoles, overall sales were down 10% from the previous month, with the PS5 down 4%, the Xbox range down 33% and the Nintendo Switch up 15%. There were also 584,000 accessories sold in October, which is 15% lower than in October 2022.
So despite a mega month of exciting and highly acclaimed titles, October 2023 has actually been less impressive than expected in terms of UK sales.
