Basketball: Bayreuth gets its fourth win of the season against the Dresden Titans

BBC Bayreuth celebrated a 75:66 victory on Saturday evening in the 2nd Basketball Bundesliga ProA against the Dresden Titans.

The BBC started the game confidently. After two threes from Moritz Plescher and Lenny Liedtke, Bayreuth was quickly ahead 8-2. After another long-range goal from Moritz Plescher, the score was 11:5 for the BBC after just over five minutes. Bayreuth made a wide-awake impression and showed good body language. After a three-pointer from Marco Rahn, the BBC was ahead by ten points. Dresden produced a relatively high number of turnovers and was too ineffective under the board. The BBC was leading 22:10 after ten minutes.

In the second quarter the game got faster, Dresden got within 14:23, BBC head coach Mladen Drijencic took the first timeout. The game was now more balanced. Dresden came within 21:26 with a 7-0 series – Mladen Drijencic called his men for a second timeout. The Bayreuth team then slightly extended their lead to 30:24. As a result, Dresden came within 29:30. The hosts were now fully in the game and equalized to 32:32. At least Esa Ahmad managed a layup to give Bayreuth a 34:32 halftime lead. However, Dresden won the second quarter 22:12 and now had the momentum on its side.

Daniel Kirchner and Grant Teichmann scored two three-pointers to give Dresden a fantastic start to the second half and put the hosts ahead 38:34. However, Bayreuth didn’t let themselves be shaken off and equalized to 42:42 with a free throw from Marios Giotis. After 27 minutes, the BBC led again 46:44 after two more Giotis hits from the free throw line. After all, Bayreuth went into the final quarter with a five-point lead in front of a season-record crowd of 2,513 spectators.

Koen Sapwell quickly cut the lead to 51:53 with a three-pointer for the Titans, and Esa Ahmad also scored from distance – again 56:51 for the BBC. Esa Ahmad again extended the lead to 60:53. After 35 minutes the hosts were back up 59:62. Two free throws from Shane Gatling put Bayreuth ahead 66:59 with two minutes left. Daniel Kirchner then missed two free throws for Dresden, Koen Sapwell only hit one of two free throws in the next attack. One minute before the end it was 71:64 for the BBC, Shane Gatling made everything clear with 73:64. Ultimately, Bayreuth won 75:66, Aaron Carver scored the last two points for the BBC. After eight games, Bayreuth now has a balanced record of four wins and four defeats in Pro A.

“We implemented our game plan well and showed decent defense. So we were able to keep Dresden at 66 points. As a young team, we want to continue to think from game to game. After the start of the season, which wasn’t what we actually imagined, we’re now hoping to start a small series,” sums up Moritz Plescher.

The next game for the BBC is on Sunday afternoon in front of the home crowd against Phoenix Hagen.
