Russian War Veterans and Access to Weapons: The Controversial Situation

“Now here and there, the criminogenic situation will probably worsen. People are returning from SMO (special military operation, because in Russia it is forbidden to call war a war – Ed.). Someone, for example, has sat down. Some of them have started on the road to reform, and some have not,” Ivanov said on the 74.ru portal.

Despite this, Ivanov advocated for simplifying the purchase of threaded barrel and semi-automatic weapons for war veterans (not only Ukrainian, but also participants of other wars). According to the bill, they will be able to buy weapons without training and seniority in the hunting collective. The State Duma explains it as a desire to “increase trust towards war participants on the part of the state and society”.

Ivanov believes that the doctors are responsible for the possible risk, as they will have to get a report from a psychiatrist and a narcologist. In 2021, even before the new invasion of Ukraine, there were about one and a half million war veterans in Russia. By June of this year, more than 133 thousand more received this status.

Those who came from the war in Ukraine murdered at least 30 people in Russia. Nineteen of them were killed by mercenaries of the “Wagner” gang, recruited in prisons – murderers, rapists, robbers and other criminals. Among those released are Sergej Hadzhikurbanov, the organizer of the murder of journalist Anna Politkovska, and Aleksandr Yenaleyev, whose gang “specialized” in robbery and murder of long-distance drivers. He has been liquidated in Ukraine, but his accomplice Sergej Zuzlev has been rehabilitated.

“Ukaz” pardoning criminals for participating in the war is signed by the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, who said: “I want to say that we are all human, everyone can make mistakes, they have made them at some point, but they gave their lives for the motherland and redeemed their guilt in full degree.”

Putin admitted that such libertines tend to commit new crimes, but cynically added: “That’s life, you can’t do anything here, it dictates its harsh rules to us.” This is the attitude of Putin, who is still adored by many Russians, towards their life.
