Puan Maharani Maintains Communication with President Jokowi Amid Political Unrest

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – PDI-P DPP Chair Puan Maharani emphasized that she continues to maintain communication with President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

He said his communication with Jokowi was not affected by the ongoing political “unrest”, such as the issue of a breakdown in relations due to the nomination of Jokowi’s eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, to become Prabowo Subianto’s vice presidential candidate.

Puan conveyed this when she met Jokowi at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, Monday (20/11/2023).

“The meeting with Pak Jokowi went well, smoothly, comfortably,” said Puan in her statement, Monday.

“And there was no riot as stated. Let’s just stay calm,” he continued.

Meanwhile, Puan’s visit to the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, today was in the context of a Courtesy Call for MIKTA parliament members with President Jokowi before the opening of the 9th MIKTA Speakers’ Consultation.

MIKTA itself is a group of middle power countries consisting of Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey and Australia.

At the Presidential Palace, Puan guided President Jokowi’s meeting with the Chairman of the South Korean National Assembly Kim-Jin Pyo, the Chairman of the Turkish Grand National Assembly Numan Kurtulmu, Deputy Chairman of the Australian Senate Andrew McLachlan, and the leadership of the Mexican parliament represented by the Parliamentary Secretary, Fuesanta Guerrero Esquivel.

During the Courtesy Call, Puan was seen sitting next to President Jokowi.

In the statement, it was stated that Puan and Jokowi had a warm conversation and smiled at each other.

According to Puan, there was no special reason why she and Jokowi sat side by side.

“I sat next to each other because I was next to the President, the others sat to the right and left. “We are talking specifically about the MIKTA Forum,” said the Chairman of the DPR RI.

Today’s meeting is the first meeting between Puan and Jokowi after the high political tension ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

This follows the decision of President Jokowi’s son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, to accompany Prabowo Subianto as vice presidential candidate.

In fact, PDI-P as the party where Jokowi and Gibran belong, supports the pair Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD.
