Former first lady Rosalynn Carter died Sunday at her home in the US state of Georgia. She was the wife of Jimmy Carter, who served as US president from 1977 to 1981.
The newspaper The Washington Post writes that Rosalynn Carter had a “gentle, Southern demeanor that disguised an ambitious and determined character.”
“As first lady, she occupied an unprecedented position during her husband’s presidency.” She attended cabinet meetings and provided advice on policy issues. In addition, Rosalynn Carter urged Parliament to legislate for people with mental illnesses.
The Democratic ex-president is now 99 years old. Carter is the oldest living former American president and the longest-living president in American history. He suffers from poor health. His treatment ended at the beginning of this year.
Current US President Joe Biden, who served in the Senate during Carter’s presidency, writes that Rosalynn Carter “chose her own path, inspiring a nation and the world in the process.” The Biden couple call her, among other things, “a champion of equal rights and opportunities for women and girls”.
Former American presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump also praised the former first lady in their reactions to her death.
