Lions manage last minute win – Bills roll over Jets

Week 11 of the NFL saw several surprises and thrillers. The Detroit Lions only beat the Chicago Bears in the final seconds of Justin Fields’ comeback, while the Cleveland Browns once again needed a field goal with the final siren to win. Meanwhile, the Miami Dolphins struggled against the Las Vegas Raiders, who lost for the first time under Antonio Pierce.

A number of injuries, some serious, were again recorded in the late games. In purely sporting terms, the New York Jets were defeated by the Buffalo Bills and quarterback Zach Wilson ended up on the bench. Meanwhile, in the NFC West, the 49ers are back on top.

Cincinnati Bengals (5-5) @ Baltimore Ravens (8-3)

• The Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns entered the game tied for second place in the AFC North. The game itself was just as balanced as the balance. The Browns D sniffed a safety several times at the beginning and quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson played solidly. At halftime, the Browns led comfortably 10-0. The second half belonged to the Steelers. With a 74-yard touchdown run right after halftime, Jaylen Warren brought the Steelers within three points. In the fourth quarter, the Steelers equalized with a field goal before the Browns converted the winning field goal from 34 yards after a strong final drive.

Chicago Bears (3-8) @ Detroit Lions (8-2)

Result: 26:31 (7:0, 3:14, 10:0, 6:17) BOXSCORE

• The Lions looked like the clear favorites in advance. They led the NFC North with a 7-2 record. Division rival Chicago was in last place at 3-7. But the Bears got off to a good start. However, the Lions recovered in the second quarter and narrowly led 14:10 at halftime after a strong touchdown catch by Amon-Ra St. Brown. After the break, the Bears were back in control and extended their lead to 26:14.
• The Lions seemed to beat themselves with four turnovers. After a touchdown from Jameson Williams, the hosts turned the game around with a touchdown from David Montgomery with 30 seconds left and made it 29:26 with a 2-point conversion. A safety from Aidan Hutchinson sealed the victory a few seconds later.
• While Amon-Ra St. Brown was once again one of the stars for the Lions (8 REC, 77 YDS, TD), EQ St. Brown ultimately had two receptions for 19 yards in the opening phase.

Los Angeles Chargers (4-6) @ Green Bay Packers (4-6)

Result: 20:23 (3:0, 7:10, 3:6, 7:7) BOXSCORE

• The game started aggressively but unsuccessfully with unconverted fourth down attempts on both sides before the Packers scored their first touchdown early in the second quarter with a 32-yard touchdown run by Jayden Reed.
• Pass rusher Joey Bosa had to be taken off the field after just five minutes with a knee injury, leaving the Chargers defense weakened. Shortly thereafter, the Chargers took the lead again after a 51-yard touchdown from Justin Herbert to Stone Smartt. Shortly before halftime, Packers running back Aaron Jones had to be taken to the dressing room with an injury.
• After another Packers touchdown, Chargers running back Austin Ekeler fumbled at the Packers 2-yard line. However, the Packers couldn’t convert the turnover into points and so the Chargers took the lead with five minutes left through Keenan Allen. Almost three minutes later, the Packers countered with Jordan Love’s second touchdown pass to make it 23:20. The Chargers couldn’t get out of their own half on the last drive and so narrowly lost.

Las Vegas Raiders (5-6) @ Miami Dolphins (7-3)

Result: 13:20 (10:7, 3:7, 0:6, 0:0) BOXSCORE

• The Dolphins’ high-speed offense was once again not as dynamic as it has been this season, but their own defense ultimately made the difference in Miami’s important home win. The best man was cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who caught two interceptions, including a deep shot into the end zone by Raiders QB Aidan O’Connell in the final seconds. In total, O’Connell threw three picks.
• Offensively, Tua Tagovailoa (325 YDS, 2 TD, INT) and Tyreek Hill (10 REC, 146 YDS, TD) stood out. However, the Dolphins also lost running back De’Von Achane, who only returned in this game after a long injury layoff. He injured his knee in the first half and didn’t return.
• For interim coach Antonio Pierce, it was the first defeat in the third game in the manager’s chair.

New York Giants (3-8) @ Washington Commanders (5-6)

Result: 31:19 (7:3, 7:6, 0:3, 17:7) BOXSCORE

• After three defeats in a row, the Giants won again for the first time and for the first time with Tommy DeVito as the team’s starting quarterback. Curiously, their last victory to this point was also a success over the Washington Commanders!
• DeVito threw three touchdown passes, one more in this game alone than Daniel Jones did all season. And: Jones last threw three TD passes in a game in December 2019. DeVito did this despite racking up nine total sacks, including five in the first quarter. No team has scored so many in the first quarter since 2006.
• The game was decided when Isaiah Simmons caught Sam Howell’s third interception of the game. Offensively, Saquon Barkley scored two touchdowns and had 140 scrimmage yards.

Dallas Cowboys (7-3) @ Carolina Panthers (1-9)

Result: 33:10 (7:0, 10:3, 0:7, 16:0) BOXSCORE

• The Cowboys had the game in hand from the start. After touchdowns from Luke Schoonmaker and CeeDee Lamb, the score went into halftime with a score of 17:3. Towards the end of the third quarter, the Panthers finally found the end zone after a long drive by Tommy Tremble. The Cowboys stepped up at the beginning of the last quarter with Tony Pollard and shortly afterwards finally put the lid on it with a pick-6 from DaRon Bland. Cornerback Bland scored his fourth touchdown of the season. Of all the Cowboys, only CeeDee Lamb (6) has more trips to the end zone.

Tennessee Titans (3-7) @ Jacksonville Jaguars (7-3)

Result: 14:34 (0:7, 0:6, 7:14, 7:7) BOXSCORE

• The Jaguars survived last week’s defeat in San Francisco well and bounced back successfully against their division rivals Titans. Trevor Lawrence and wide receiver Calvn Ridley (103 YDS, 2 TD) were the leaders in the home win. The Jaguars’ defense also impressed with two recovered fumbles and also held Derrick Henry to 38 yards (10 carries).

Arizona Cardinals (2-9) @ Houston Texans (6-4)

Result: 16:21 (10:7, 0:14, 6:0, 0:0) BOXSCORE

• Important victory for the Texans, who stay one game behind the Jaguars in the AFC South with their win over the Cardinals. But it was a tough job because rookie QB CJ Stroud had an extremely shaky day. Although he threw two touchdown passes in the game, he also had three interceptions – one more than he had in his first nine games in the NFL.
• With the guests, who fought courageously until a missed 4th down at the very end, Kyler Murray showed what is possible with him on the field. The QB not only threw a touchdown pass, he also ran for a score himself.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-6) @ San Francisco 49ers (7-3)

• Crisis over! After a series of three bankruptcies, the 49ers have now impressively come back with their second win in a row. Brock Purdy in particular delivered a sparkling performance and led his team to victory with three touchdown passes. Meanwhile, Brandon Aiyuk made the preliminary decision shortly after the break – he made a 76-yard touchdown catch and thus extended the lead to 20:7.
• For the visitors, Baker Mayfield threw a deflected interception into the end zone. It was his first red zone pick in four years in the NFL. To make matters worse, Tampa also had to deal with two injuries. Cornerback Carlton Davis was out with a hip injury and linebacker Lavonte David was out with a groin injury. On the 49ers’ side, safety Talanoa Hufanga has most likely torn his cruciate ligament, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

New York Jets (4-6) @ Buffalo Bills (6-5)

• The comeback of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, which was supposedly announced for December, did not provide the hoped-for upswing for the New York Jets. On the contrary: Xavier Gipson lost a fumble on the first kickoff return of the game. However, the Jets defense still held the home team to three field goals in the early stages.
• It was only an interception by Zach Wilson that really got the Bills going. James Cook caught Josh Allen’s first touchdown pass of the game. The Jets responded with their best drive, fueled by a fake punt for a first down. Wilson found Breece Hall on a checkdown and the running back turned it into a nine-yard touchdown. However, the subsequent two-point conversion failed.
• After halftime, the Bills topped things off with a 28-yard touchdown catch from Ty Johnson and an 81-yard touchdown catch from Khalil Shakir off cornerback Sauce Gardner on a slant route.
• The game was overshadowed by a potentially serious injury to safety Taylor Rapp, who collided with cornerback Taron Johnson in the first half. Johnson remained lying there while Rapp took a few more steps and then collapsed. Officially, Rapp was transported with a neck injury, while Johnson suffered a concussion.
• For the Jets, Wilson (7/15, 81 YDS, TD, INT) disappointed again and was replaced by Tim Boyle in the second half. But the latter was also ultimately unsuccessful.

Seattle Seahawks (6-4) @ Los Angeles Rams (4-6)

Result: 16:17 (7:0, 6:7, 3:0, 0:10) BOXSCORE

• The Seahawks got off to a good start in the division duel against the Rams. They took a 13-0 lead with long drives that ended in a DK Metcalf touchdown and two field goals. The Rams cut the deficit six seconds before halftime with a Puka Nacua touchdown, but lost Cooper Kupp to an ankle injury.
• At the end of the third quarter, the Seahawks also suffered a loss. Quarterback Geno Smith injured his elbow when he was hit hard by Aaron Donald. Drew Lock came on for Smith. Lock threw an interception, after which the Rams took the lead 17:16 with a field goal. With a minute and a half on the clock, Geno Smith came back into the game and led the Seahawks down the field. Kicker Jason Myers had the victory on his feet, but missed the field goal from 55 yards.

• With this result, the 49ers have taken over first place in the NFC West from the Seahawks.
