NIJMEGEN – The CWZ will organize a theme evening on prostate cancer together with the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Marikenhuis on Monday, November 20. The meeting in the Marikenhuis at Slotemaker de Bruïnweg 163 in Nijmegen is from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM. Free entrance. Register via www.marikenhuis.nl. There is room for questions that you can also submit in advance when registering.
This evening there will be special attention to timely detection and current diagnostics and also what is currently (and perhaps in the future) still possible for metastatic prostate cancer. Speakers include an expert by experience (about what it is like to live with metastatic prostate cancer); nurse specialist in urology Joost de Baaij (about detection of prostate cancer, investigation of suspicion and new technique for biopsy) and oncologist Marieke Berends (about the current treatment of metastatic prostate cancer. What does the future hold?).
In 2022, prostate cancer was diagnosed 14,649 times; that is 38 men per day. And that number increases every year. Of these men, 10% are younger than 60 years old. When diagnosed, the cancer has already spread in 1 in 5 men. However, the cancer usually causes few complaints at that time. More than 3,000 men die from prostate cancer every year. There is therefore a lot of talk about screening and population research. Fortunately, curative treatment can often be initiated or, even in the case of metastases, men can continue to live for quite some time with new treatment methods and with a reasonable quality of life.
